Nicole Callahan, Reading Buddy!

| September 4, 2010

Hey!  My name is Nicole Callahan and I’m really looking forward to participating in the Reading Buddy program.  I’m a first year PhD student in the English Education program, interested in examining reading as process of constructing meaning through drafting and revision, and the ways that understanding and revealing this process can help students with difficult texts like Shakespeare, Donne and Milton.  I am originally from Santa Barbara, California, and I have my BA in English and my single-subject secondary credential from Columbia University.  I did my student teaching in the Bronx, taught for a year in a public school in Santa Barbara, and have spent the past four years in Los Angeles, teaching at a private, independent Catholic girls’ school in Westwood.  This past summer I had a fellowship with the National Writing Project at UCLA, and it got me really excited to be back in school as a student.  When I’m not teaching or reading or writing, I’m usually running, hiking, singing, traveling, doing yoga or cooking.  I’m thrilled to be back in New York City, and really excited at the opportunity to make a big difference in the lives of four kids this year.
