Karin Van Orman, Reading Buddy!

| September 8, 2010

Hello!  My name is Karin Van Orman, and I’m a new to the Reading Buddy program.  I’m a first-year doctoral student in English Education, and this is my first time living in New York City.  Most recently, I was the English Department Chair for a girls’ boarding school in New Jersey, but earlier in my career I taught English in an independent school in Vermont and a public alternative high school in San Francisco.  I have a master’s degree in Secondary Education from San Francisco State University (which is also where I earned my teaching credential). The intersections between popular culture and education fascinate me, and I enjoy thinking about the ways in which issues around culture and identity play out in the classroom. When I am not studying, I like to travel, see movies or plays, and go to concerts.  In addition to the deep honor I feel for being selected as a Zankel Fellow, I’m excited to learn along with my four buddies as we build our literacy skills.
